Theorist: Vernallis

Ariana Grande - Into You

Vernallis theory includes an unconventional order of shots, meaning they shift more freely and have no set order. Ariana Grande's music video includes this as all her shots are very random and mostly in different locations meaning there's no set order to them. Ariana's music video also uses discontinuity as the video draws us away from the narrative. Her video is very interesting and includes a vary of different locations, distracting us from the narrative behind the video and drawing us into concentrating on what the video actually consist of. The time, space and characters within this music video all appear incompletely, as stated in Vernallis' theory.

Furthermore, Vernallis' theory also includes that sometimes all elements (colour, editing, etc...) are equal, however sometimes one is dominant and the others are subordinate. In Ariana's video I think that everything is equal and the colour and editing are both very dominant  and both change a lot throughout the video.

However, her theory also includes that the music video have discontinuity as pop videos normally draw us away from the narrative. In my opinion, I don't think Ariana's video is like this, her video is very easy to understand and relates to the narrative that the lyrics are saying. Therefore, I don't think the video takes over the narrative.
